Slow Running Computer? 3 "Surefire" Fixes For a Slow Computer

If you are stuck with a “slow running computer”, unfortunately there isn’t one single “remedy” that’s guaranteed to work. The solution is to just try a combination of different things.

But having said that, there are some problems that are far more common than others. Here are 3 problems and their corresponding solutions for the most oft-seen computer problems.

PROBLEM #1) Registry

One of the most common is the registry. This is actually to blame for up to 90% of all Windows computer performance issues. The registry is the “central command” system for your system. Every time you add or delete a file, it gets added to the registry.

Remember–your Registry has to sort through all the old records of every file you’ve downloaded in the past to get to the new files you are currently using. Obviously if it takes a long time to find it, this will cause delays.

Also, sometimes size isn’t the issue–it’s simply that things are saved the wrong way, either by you or the Registry. Either way, the only solution is a “registry cleaner”. I would recommend doing a “free registry scan” before paying just to make sure this is a potential issue. If your computer is older, more likely than not it’s a faulty Registry that is causing slow-downs.

PROBLEM #2) Error messages

Believe it or not, if your PC sends you error messages, simply typing them into a Search Engine in quotes should pull up the solution you need. It’s almost guaranteed somebody else has had that exact problem… and you can just see what others have done to fix it.

REMEDY #3) Get rid of programs

The reason for this is obvious-it makes more room. But don’t forget to afterwards go to the “Recycle Bin” and delete it there as well.

How to Make a DJ Splitter Cable

Just starting out as a DJ? Don’t have a dedicated sound card, and don’t want to buy one until you’re sure DJing is for you? Or maybe you’re DJing from your iPod or iPad using one of Algoriddim’s djay software programs? Or perhaps you have a sound card, but it’s having technical difficulties just when you’ve got a major event scheduled.

Whatever the reason, there are times when you don’t have access to a DJ sound card or controller but you still need to do a professional job as DJ. And in order to do that, it’s obvious that you need to have two audio outputs from your music player – one that the audience is hearing and a second one for your headphones only, which is usually the next track so that you can find the proper starting place and check the track for speed, EQ and other factors.

Fortunately there is a relatively cheap and simple solution to this problem. If you have dedicated DJ software like Virtual DJ, Traktor Pro, DJ for iPhone, DJ for iPod Touch or DJ for iPad, it is fairly easy to find splitter cables that allow your DJ software to send the audience signal (also known as the master signal) down the left-hand channel of the music player’s stereo headphones output, while sending the signal for the next track (also known as the monitor, cue or headphone signal) down the right hand channel.

Once the signal is split, you use a special lead to take the left-hand master output and connect it to the speakers for the audience to enjoy, while at the same time sending the right-hand monitor output to your headphones so you can cue up the next track properly. In other words, you are using a single stereo audio output to deliver 2 separate mono outputs.

You can easily buy a dedicated splitter cable for DJing on Amazon or other music sites. Or, if you’re handy, you can also make your own splitter cable by using an 1/8″ stereo headphones (TRS) plug to two 1/8″ mono headphones (TRS) jack lead, and then two 1/8″ mono headphones (TRS) plug to 1/8? stereo headphones TRS jack leads, for a total of three leads.

The main disadvantage of this setup is that you’re relying on the quality of your music player’s in-built sound, whether that player is an iPad, computer, iPhone, or other device. So of course if the player is producing a poor quality sound, your DJing sound quality will obviously be sub-par as well.

Another possible problem is that the audience signal that you are generating using a splitter is in mono rather than stereo. However, this is less of an issue than you might expect because most club and bar PA systems are actually mono anyway.

Finally, you do need to keep in mind that the audience signal will only be half-power due to the splitting. If possible you would want to have a mixer or PA system available to boost your signal again so as to give the audience the best music experience.

However, even with these limitations, a splitter cable is certainly a practical and inexpensive tool every DJ should be aware of for those situations when a dedicated DJ controller or sound card simply isn’t available.

Two Dads: One Computer-maniac, the Other Computer-phobic

I have two Dads. That sounds strange does not it? One is my genetic father, and the other is my geneticist father. The genetic Dad I've only ever lived with for one year when I was an infant, while the geneticist Dad is what you would call a step-father, but I've lived in close proximity with him for more than 20 years. I feel close to them both. I connect differently with each of them but on a pretty much equal level. The reason I'm sharing my personal information with you is because I've just had a realization about my fathers in relation to the area that I work in: computers and the Internet. It's really quite interesting.

One father is a computer maniac. Whenever a new technology, software, gadget, or website emerges he is one of the first to grab it up and evaluate it. My other father has an old piece-of-crap box that looks something like a computer, with a tediously slow dial-up connection to the World Wide Web. Compared to the wireless, broadband Mac personal computer and mobile-connected Mac laptop of the enthusiast, they could not be further parts of the galaxy.

Then there's me. I could be construed as being a walking paradox, an enigma, or just plainly twisted when it comes to my relationship with the computer and Internet sphere of life. Nature / nurture, genetic / environmental … For whatever strange reason, I have turned out to be a combination of the two papas. I work as a creative writer for an Internet web-hosting company. I love the ideas and valuable functions and tools that the Internet has brought to humanity (or was it humanity that bought it to the Internet?). However, I have issues and challenges when it comes to using these awe-inspiring machines.

Currently I am away from home in a different city visiting my girlfriend. At home (I am currently living with my parents-Mother and geneticist, as I'm going to live overseas soon) all I have to do to get on the Internet is open up my laptop and I'm on-line. If I'm at work, I go to my PC and all of my settings are stored and ready for me to use. While in a new place, things have not been running as smoothly as I would've liked. The answers are probably simple and easy to do, but this is one of the kinds of challenges that cause me to stumble. Although I am deeply interested and have a true faith in this new technology, I am a real novice when it comes to getting things done on someone else's computer.

I bought my laptop with me. My girlfriend only has a dial-up connection which she uses with her laptop. I could use hers' but she's Chinese so a lot of what comes up on the screen is illegible to me. I do not know how to change her language configuration. I'm used to doing it quite easily on my Mac, but her computer is a PC and I'm not as practiced in this other format. That's one of my problems. I only have so much patience when it comes to working these technological issues out; It could have a trait passed on by my ice-age father (No judgment is being laid here.) He just does not feel that he can work new technologies out. "He's had a digital telephone answering machine for two years which he still hasn ' T set up. He feels bad about it but his manual one does the job, so he sticks with it.). I'm also a little afraid to hook my laptop up to her dial-up line as I know from experience that I'll have to change some settings of which I am not confident about doing.

So the next answer was to go to her university where she said people use their laptops wirelessly in the library. That sounded cool so I went in and tried it out. I even tried changing the settings to get it to work (It took courage.) But I could not get it to work. I was weary about asking for help because I was not really a student at that particular learning establishment. Instead, I've been using the library's computers. This is OK, but since I can not walk away with the files I create (I borrowed my girlfriend's thumb-drive but an experience from the past of not being able to transfer information from PC to Mac deters me from using it-again, An irrational fear. I know it, and I will give it a try this week. I've saved to saving my files in my email account as attachments. It's not conventional, but it works.

Another issue I've had is getting onto my messenger service. The university computers do not have it on their desktop, and when I tried to download an on-line version I was told that I did not have the authority to do so. I went to an Internet café, and I could do work there (I'm working on the road) but I feel kind of silly paying to get paid. It was cool there because as they had messenger with voice and video and I was able to have a conversation with my brother who is traveling around India. He could see my sister and me, but we could not see him as he said the Indian computer devices (webcams, headsets) in that town were looking a little bit crappy in design and also looked worn for wear. It was heaps of fun making funny faces knowing that he would be seeing us. I think he's getting lonely as he's only 19 years old and has been away from home for over 7 months.

As you can see I've inherited beliefs about computer from both of my Dads. I find things more difficult than most, I believe, but I'm not going to give up doing my best to get the things done that I feel are necessary. Over time I hope to get over these little obstacles and hurdles and become proficient in all of the cool aspects of this new realm of human endeavor. I also have faith that the technicians and engineers are probably working hard to make things simple for the rest of us.

Whatever happens, I'm going to stick with it, and when I go to see my genetic father next I'm going to do my best to inspire him to buy a new computer with a Broadband connection. Then all I have to do is show him a few of the amazing things that this human created Internet tool can do. One of the aspects of the Web that affects me is mostly the simple fact that if you think of anything at all in the known Universe, you can then look it up on your search engine like Google and in the time it takes to blink your Eye, immediately start to learn. It sure beats catching the train to the library, looking up a book in the card catalog, searching for it, then finding out that someone else has borrowed it and is late bringing it back.

TRAIN: Moving from one city to another by means of train is considered as the most reliable and affordable mean of travelling. Trains now for long have remained a top priority of people for travelling. Travelling by train has all the ingredients that it takes for a perfect travel as it is quick and reliable and cheap mean of travelling.

Disk Backup Solution

Whether you work from home or for a large conglomerate backing up the information contained on your PC is essential. But when it comes to finding the right disk backup solution you may become somewhat confused as to what is the best, simply because there are so many different ones to choose from.

You can either go for solutions where you back up everything you have to an external hard drive, which connects to your PC using a USB cable. Or the other solution is to use an online data backup service. Also, you have the choice of going for either a tape or disk to disk back up system. Which one you choose to use depends on the type of PC you have as well as the kind of network that you are using.

Previously when people where wanting to back up information that they have collected on their PC’s they would use tapes. However today more and more people are relying on disk based ones instead. So what are the advantages to using a disk backup system over a tape one. Below we will take a look at what some of these are.

Advantage 1 – Actually moving the information from your PC on to a disk backup system is far quicker than with a tape one. Not only is it much quicker it also allows you to configure the settings on the disk to meet the exact requirements of those of the disk on your PC. This means not only are you saving yourself time but also money as well.

Advantage 2 – Disks are far less vulnerable to being damaged either by people or the environment. The problem with tape backup systems is that they are vulnerable and can be easily damaged by heat, humidity and dirt. Because of this, you can expect when trying to restore data from tapes then you will find that you have lost between 25 and 50% of the data that has been stored on it.

Advantage 3 – Disks are far stronger than tape so they will last much longer and can stand up to you constantly overwriting the information that is already on them. Also because these come in sealed cases the chances of them being affected by external elements is greatly reduced.

Advantage 4 – Probably one of the biggest advantages to be gained form using a disk backup solution system is that they are far easier to manage. This is because such systems will often come with tools to help you manage the system and in some cases are browser based so it allows for easy configuration of settings as well as checking the status of how the backups are proceeding.

But the biggest problem with being shy around men is being able to hold up your end of a conversation. The more you think about it, the more nervous you get, and the more nervous you feel, the more your shyness kicks in. Don’t let it get to that point.

Go With A Group

If one to one conversations are your downfall, then stick to being part of a group. It’s easier to add to a conversation than it is to be ready to respond to everything that’s being said. In a one on one conversation, that’s what happens. It’s like playing tennis. When the ball is in your court, you have to return it to keep the game going. So don’t spend time one on one with a man until you get to know him a bit better, so there are no drags in the conversation.

If he asks you out, don’t drive yourself crazy worrying about what you’re going to talk about. Instead suggest going to a movie, or attending a ball game, so there is less one on one face time.

Religious Stew – PC Poison in the Pot

When Jesus asked a crowd of people who felt their religion justified them about what he would find at his second coming he said "Neverheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" (Luke 18: 8) No one in the crowd answered him because the answer is understood. The answer is of course; No! So what replace faith, what could possibly pre-empt faith in the Gospel. The answer is unilaterally and odd; It is religion itself.

Religion if centered on the finished work of Christ creates a good supplement to express and renew faith but it often becomes a substitute instead of a supplement. In the apostasy this substitution is accelerated by ecumenism, syncretism and liberalism. The need to bring all religions under one roof is expressed most often in the penchant for ecumenism. The catalyst for ecumenism is syncretism which is a forced alignment of different doctrines and beliefs so that one size fits all. Syncretism can not be accomplished without liberalism. A lax attitude that says one religion or any particular belief is as good as any other. It is liberalism's key to unlock the kitchen cabinet and throw in anything and everything into the pot.

It does well to note that while the secular world view of strict evangelicals, fundamentalist and any sect that holds stringently to the Gospel is that they are intolerant and perhaps even belligerent, Christ does not see it that way. To him they are the blessed faithful of the earth, indeed the very "salt of the earth." Sadly in today's climate of PC, tolerance and diversity some of the salt is losing its savour. (Mt. 5:13)

The apostasy is not only a promise and a prophesied surety in the Bible it is one of the specific elements that help to usher in or precipitate the second coming of Christ. (2Th 2: 3) The "New World Order" is predicated on the threefold idea that there must be one world government, one world economy and one world religion. The best way to stop the bickering and infighting in various religions is to throw them all into one single pot and pronounce that they are a single substance. Are they all of the same substance? Not on your life!

Did Buddha die for the sins of the world? Has Muhammad been raised from the dead? Will Oprah destroy the enemies of Israel at the battle of Armageddon? Will the city built on the God given New Earth that measures 1500 miles in height be built by the Army Corp of Engineers? No, all religions are not the same and no comparative religions course even if it is 202 or higher will explain the aforementioned with any honesty.

Liberalism in Christianity has almost all of the same ear markings as political or secular progressive liberalism. Keep a close check on the economy, our country's image in the world and do not over tax the citizens and pretty much all else is of little consequence. Hollywood can dump on us and our children, legislators can promote any agenda they like and academics can teach our children anything they choose to imagine. As long as we do not commit major crimes we can do just about anything that comes to mind with relative impunity. That's the secular world view and the liberal church's view is only a little behind that.

When liberalism hits the church it is the basic tenets of the faith that get cut first. Adherence to strict Biblical doctrines and the promulgation of the Gospel are attacked first. In the end the churches may still go on as usual but you can adopt a sort of 12 step approach to God and he can be "whatever you perceive him to be." I actually heard someone say that God could have a light bulb to you and it would not matter. Sadly it makes a liar out of God and if it were possible a fool as well. Is not it an act of foolishness for God to let his only begotten son die for the sins of the world if they could get redemption in any other of a myriad of ways? What a waste.

Not everyone in the Christian church goes gutless as the New World Order comes waltzing in. Some churches and believers will remain faithful to the simple Gospel of salvation till the very end. As with any good army someone is on the front "holding the line." They will take the fire and many will make the ultimate sacrifice if necessary. Will it be necessary?

According to the Prophet Daniel and the book of Revelation the believers will most certainly come a direct onslaught from the coming world dictator known today only as the antichrist. Not as well known is the fact that he will cast off the ecumenical and liberal churches first then go after the remaining faithful. He (antichrist) will have no mercy on any religion, the Muslim, Judaic and Hindu religions will not escape either.

It will be a life and death struggle that for a while will look completely hopeless. That hope will suddenly shift back to the church at the end of antichrist's rule because Christ himself will intervene. No wonder the Apostle Paul referred to that shift as a "blessed hope" in Titus 2:13. At the end of the antichrist's rule the hope of every true Christian will become sight, they will see their Lord subdue the earth and remove the governments of the planet away from the hands of men.

The arch deceiver (Satan) is also the arch distracter. He can lead the apostate church (some of them) away with what looks like wonderful causes and missions like global warming, social causes, and a plethora of similar tripe. Those who know the scripture know full well that global warming has nothing to do with the coming judgments and will not be how the would come to its knees. Both the penchant for personal and collective sinfulness is what's warm up much faster than our temperatures are climbing. Social issues all syrupy and general will be as successful as the peace movement has been. Peace? There have been more wars in the past 100 years than all of the rest of history combined and the end is not in sight.

Churches that have not succumbed to the prosperity gospel or the emergent church doctrine, dominion-ism, oprah-ism, new age, and another half dozen or so hair brained latter day schemes are often taken in by something apparently much easier to swallow. The social gospel is full of PC attractive causes that no one would dare argue against, they come with a conscience soothing balm called "constitutional behavior." In short that means doing good stuff to offset a bad life and total rebellion to God. Being concerned can not divert being condemned; The wages of sin is still death Ro. 6:23. The death of a soul is never very social and the jingle of change in an offering plate is not a substitution for a change in the way we live.

This is not angry talk it is desperate talk. God kindly loves mankind and has offered ample proof of the same. He would rather we appreciate not apostate, and the message will not change until the last star falls. Knowing that God so loved the world is not enough at times, what is needed is the reminder that God loves you. It is a personal, one on one matter for each man or woman. In 1948 legend song writer the late Hovie Lister who began one of Southern Gospel music's most beloved groups, "The Statesmen," may have said it best in the last two verses of his famous song "How Long has it Been."

How long has it been since you talked with the Lord
And told Him your heart's hidden secrets?
How long since you prayed, how long since you stayed
On you knees till the light shone through?

How long has it been since you woke with the dawn
And felt that the days' worth the living?
Can you call Him your friend, how long has it been?
Since you know that He cared for you?

Pros and Cons of Watching Television

Many of us love watching TV especially during our free time and if we don’t have anything to do. We like watching TV while eating our favorite snacks or hanging around in a friend’s place. Either way we are entertained when we watch TV. There are many different programs we can watch on TV depending on our mood and our personality. Some love watching comedy and talk shows while others particularly kids and those who are young at heart love watching cartoons on Cartoon Network or Disney channel.

But then, watching TV has its advantages and disadvantages. Experts say that too much watching of TV especially among children is not good for the health and the mind. TV can be entertaining and informative yet at times it can be damaging and harmful.

Below are the Pros and Cons of watching TV.


1.) Entertainment and Laughter

We are entertained by shows we love to watch. We laugh at things we find funny and comical in the TV program we are watching. We also love to dance or sing along with celebrities we see on TV and some of us even copy their dance moves and singing styles.

2.) Information and How-To

We learn a lot of information about places and people that we usually don’t learn on magazines, books and newspapers. There are travel shows that show us beautiful places in the world and inform us the culture of different countries which can be a great help especially if we are planning to travel. We also easily learn how to cook new recipes by watching cooking shows and we can learn doing some other stuff through programs that show step-by-step procedures of performing a particular work, exercise or other interesting stuff.

3.) Improve Memory and Easy Learning

We usually take note of the time schedule for our favorite programs especially if it is only shown once or twice a week. We tend to store and recall the things that recently happened in our favorite show before the next episode will be shown on TV. This will help enhance our memory which we can apply on our daily life. For children, it is easier to learn math, science, alphabet and other subject matters if someone can show them how to do it like counting, identifying objects and a lot more. Educational TV shows are available for children to watch and learn.

4.) Bonding With Family and Friends

Watching TV is a great way to bond with family and friends especially on weekends. You can laugh and discuss things that you see on TV. That can be really fun.

5.) Awareness and Alertness

Weather reports and current news on different parts of the worlds can make you aware of what is happening outside your country. You can also be alert when there is an incoming typhoon in your area and that can help you get prepared.

There are TV programs that do not teach good values particularly to children. Instead of teaching them good deeds they even imitate, re-enact or spoof important things happening around us which is not good for children to watch.

Digital Phone Lines & Credit Card Terminals – Why They Don’t Go Together

Does this sound familiar?

Your phone service was recently upgraded from the old style analogue lines to a new, state-of-the-art digital technology. All of your phone calls are now crystal clear. You can get connected to the Internet 100x faster and your e-mail loads in the blink of an eye.

Phone companies are switching their systems to the latest technologies in order to better serve their customers. Out with the old, in with the new.

But, what happened to your credit card terminal? It suddenly doesn’t work as well as it use to, or perhaps not at all. Your business is suddenly at a stand-still.

Ringing a bell yet?

It certainly does for me. I hear it almost every day. Over the past few years this has become a common occurrence. In fact, if I had a quarter for every time I’ve heard of this problem I could buy a tropical island and build a five star resort, complete with an18 hole mini-golf course.

Here’s the problem. Credit card terminals are equipped with “analogue” phone modems. Those modems are built to work with the analogue lines that were just replaced with your new digital service. This probably doesn’t mean much to you. You might be wondering why this should make any difference at all. A phone line is a phone line, right? Well, not exactly….let me explain.

Analogue modems operate within a band of frequencies between 300 to 3400 hertz. In order for it to function properly, it requires a phone line that also operates within this frequency range. Your digital line speaks an entirely different language. It operates at frequencies between 25khz (kilohertz) and 1.1mhz (megahertz), which is significantly faster than your analogue lines.

These conflicting frequencies create “echoes” or “line noise” when the terminal attempts to dial out to process. Since the terminal’s modem does not have the ability to properly adapt and filter out these noises, the communication breaks down and fails. In rare cases, the digital signals can actually overwhelm the terminal’s modem, causing it to burn out.

So the question becomes, what can be done to solve this?

There is a device that you can purchase from your local electronics store for about $15 – $20. It’s called a DSL Filter. This handy little gadget will filter out the digital information coming in from your phone lines and send it to your terminal at lower frequencies, effectively cancelling out the line noise. 98% of the time the filter resolves the problem and our merchants are able to get back to business. There are unfortunately cases where it doesn’t work. For those merchants that fall into that 2%, we offer the following solutions:

  • Contact your phone company and request an analogue phone line be installed. This line will be used only for your credit card terminal
  • If you have a fax at your location, connect a phone line splitter to that wall jack, connect your terminal to one side and the fax to the other. In most cases we have found that fax machines are connected to dedicated analogue phone lines and are not replaced when the digital service is installed.
  • Upgrade to a terminal that supports an IP/Ethernet connection
  • Switch to a web based or PC based processing program.

The Man Who Could Have Become Bill Gates

The Legend Goes Like This: One fateful day in the summer of 1980, three buttoned-down IBMers called on a band of hippie programmers at Digital Research Inc. (DRI) located in Pacific Grove, Calif. They hoped to discuss licensing DRI’s industry-leading operating system, Control Program for Microcomputers (CP/M). Instead, DRI founder Gary Kildall blew off International Business Machine (IBM) to gallivant around in his airplane and the frustrated IBMers turned to Gates for their operating system.

This anecdote has been told so often that techies need only be reminded of “the day Gary Kildall went flying” to recall the rest. Gates offered to provide IBM an operating system too, even though he didn’t have one at the time. This required a hasty purchase. While he’s revered for his technical innovations, many believe Kildall made one of the biggest mistakes in the history of commerce. The saga of the computing industry is rich with outsize characters and surprising plot turns, but there’s one story that has risen over time to mythic proportions. It’s the tale of how software pioneer Gary Kildall missed out on the opportunity to supply IBM with the operating system for its first PC-essentially handing the chance of a lifetime and control of tech’s future, to rival Bill Gates and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT). In the process, he may have missed out on becoming the world’s richest man. The Book: They Made America by Harold Evans, is certain to elicit cries of protest.

That’s because it attacks the reputations of some of the key players of the early PC era-Gates, IBM and Tim Paterson (born 1956). “The Father of DOS”, an American computer programmer, the Seattle programmer who wrote an operating system, QDOS, based partly on CP/M that became Microsoft’s DOS. Paterson squirms, for instance, at the implication that he’s fixated on his authorship of DOS. He holds a profile in Forbes, contrived as a first-person account. “I was 24 when I wrote DOS,” it begins. “It’s an accomplishment that probably can’t be repeated by anyone ever.” Evans asserts that Paterson copied parts of CP/M and that IBM tricked Kildall, because Gates rather than the more innovative Kildall prevailed, according to the book, the world’s PC users endured more than a decade of crashes with incalculable economic cost in lost data and lost opportunities.

David G. Lefer, one of Evans’ two collaborators, says: “We’re trying to set the record straight. Gates didn’t invent the PC operating system and any history that says he did is wrong.” There’s no doubt that Gary Kildall an American computer scientist and microcomputer entrepreneur was one of the pioneers of the industry. He invented the first operating system for microcomputers in the early 1970s, making it possible for hobbyists and companies to build the first personal computers. Legalities aside, Microsoft’s original DOS was based in part on Kildall’s CP/M. His insight was, that by creating an operating system separate from the hardware, applications could run on computers that were made by different manufacturers. On July 8, 1994, Gary Kildall (May 19,1942-July 1994) fell at a Monterey, CA. biker bar during a biker brawl and hit his head. The exact circumstances of his death and injury remain unclear; Kildall’s colleagues recall him as creative, easygoing and adventurous.

Kildall preferred to leave the IBM affair in the past and to be known for his work before and afterward, he continually faced comparisons between himself and Bill Gates as well as fading memories of his contributions. In addition to flying, he loved sports cars, auto racing, boating and he had a lifelong love of the sea. Although his career in computing spanned more than two decades, he is mainly remembered in connection with IBM’s unsuccessful attempt in 1980 to license CP/M for the IBM PC. Gates bought Tim Paterson’s program, called QDOS, for approx. $75,000, renamed it DOS, improved it and licensed it to IBM for a low per-copy royalty fee. The rest is history. (Bill Gates Net Worth:$53 Billion: 2010).

Paterson passed in and out of Microsoft during the 80’s, but returned for good in 1990. Paterson has patents and industry awards to his professional credit (including the Stewart Alsop Hindsight Award in 1991, recognized along with Bill Gates). He’s now retired, but the prominent “First Place” trophies and clippings on the wall of his Building 2 office come from the world of off-road racing, in which he bangs a four-wheel drive Mazda around gravel back roads throughout the Northwest. “I’m still having lots of fun,” he said.

Introduction to Computer Monitors

A monitor is the primary output device for a computer. The two main types of monitors currently in use are Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) also known as flat panel display, and the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT), which is an older technology. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

Most older monitors today use cathode ray tube technology, which was first developed for use in television sets. The cathode is a negatively charged electrode that shoots a beam of electrons towards a positively charged electrode, known as an anode. The cathode ray tube is a vacuum tube containing one or more electron guns (cathodes) at one end, which fire a stream of electrons at a screen at the other end. The inside of the screen is covered with a matrix of dots composed of phosphorescent material, known as phosphors. When the phosphors are struck by electrons, they emit light. Phosphors are organized in groups of three, known as a pixel. Each pixel contains a dot that emits one of the three basic colors: red, green, and blue. Magnetic coils in the tube control the direction of the electron stream, and a control grid determines the color combination on the screen. The electron stream starts at the top of the screen moving from left to right, line by line to build an image.

An LCD monitor on the other hand uses a layer of liquid crystal material sandwiched between two grids of electrodes, one arranged in columns, the other in rows. These grids in turn are enclosed by a layer of polarizing material made out of plastic or glass. These polarizing layers are aligned so as to prevent light from passing through when the electrodes are not activated.

To generate an image, light is passed through the first polarized layer. As the light passes through liquid crystal material, the polarity is changed to allow it to pass through the second polarized layer. This is done by manipulating the electrode grids. The pixels are formed by liquid crystal cells that change the direction of light passing through them in response to an electrode grid.

LCD monitors today most commonly used what is known as thin film transistor technology (TFT), in which a transistor is placed at each intersection of the electrode grids, enhancing the signal and therefore the picture quality. This is also known as active matrix display, as opposed to the older technology known as passive matrix display.

There are many features to be considered when choosing a monitor. Some of the more important ones are: screen size, resolution, dot pitch, refresh rate, and response time. Screen size refers to the diagonal length of the screen surface. Resolution refers to the number of pixels that the monitor can display, for example 640 x 480, which indicates 640 pixels horizontally by 480 pixels vertically. The more pixels displayed, the sharper the image. Dot pitch is the distance between dots, expressed in millimeters, such as.25mm, with the smaller the number the better the image. The refresh rate for CRT monitors, or response time for LCD monitors, is the speed at which a monitor builds an image. The quicker the response time or refresh rate, the better the image.

Generally speaking, LCD monitors take up considerably less space than a CRT monitor and are lighter. In addition, LCD monitors use less electricity. However, they are usually more expensive, although this may be partially offset in the long run by the reduced electricity usage.

CRTs usually have higher refresh rates than the response times of LCD monitors, which reduces eyestrain and may be preferable for those who spend a great deal of time in front of a computer. CRT monitors can display at several resolution settings, while LCD monitors use only one resolution, called the native resolution. This can present a problem for high end gaming and graphics displays.

While LCD monitors were initially higher in price and lower in quality versus CRT monitors when they first came out years ago, the technology has improved drastically and LCD monitors now compare favorably in price and display quality to CRT monitors. Computer developers are obsessed with speed and power constantly seeking ways to promote faster processing and more main memory in a smaller area. IBM for instance came up with a new manufacturing process (called silicon-insulator) that has the effect of increasing a chip’s speed and reducing its power consumption. DSP chips: Processors for the Post-Pc Era

Millions on people may be familiar with the “Intel Inside” slogan calling attention to the principal brand of the microprocessor used in microcomputers. But they probably are unaware that they are more apt to go through the day using another kind of chip-digital signal processors (DSP’s), integrated circuits designed for high speed data manipulation, Made mainly by Texas Instruments but also by Lucent, Motorola, and Analog Communications, and image manipulations. Made mainly by devices, DSPs are designed to manipulate digital signals in speech music and video, and so they are found in pagers, cell phones, cars, hearing aids, and even in washing machines.

Digital signal processing is present only one-fifth the size of the $21 billion microprocessor business. But in most post-PC era, communications and internet driven devices – which need to handles enormous streams of real world information, such as sounds and images are expected to supplant the personal computer. Thus in 10 years its possible that DSP’s could outsell Microprocessors.


Nanotechnology, nanoelectronics, nanostructures, all start with a measurement known as nanometer. A nanometer is a billionth of a meter, which means we are operating at the level of atoms and molecules. A human hair is approximately 100,000 nano meters in diameter.

In nanotechnology, molecules are used to create tiny machines for holding data and performing tasks. Experts attempt to do nanofabrication by building tiny nanostructures one atom or molecule at a time. When applied to chips and other electronic devices, the field is called nanoelectronics.

Today scientists are trying to simulate the on/off of traditional transistors by creating transistor switches that manipulate a single electron, the sub-atomic particle that is the fundamental unit of electricity. In theory a trillion of these electrons could be put on a chip the size of fingernail. Scientists have already forged layers of individual molecules into tiny computer components into devices called chemically assembled electronic devices, or CAENs. These machines would be billions of times more powerful than today’s personal computers.

CAEN components are supposed to be up and running within 10 years. But computer makers are already getting some payoffs from nanotechnology, which is being used to build read/write heads for hard disks drives, improving the speed with which computers can access data.

Optical Computing

Today’s computers are electronic, tomorrow’s might be optical, or opto-electronic using light, not electricity. With optical technology a machine using lasers, lenses and mirrors would represent the on/off codes of data with pulses of light.

Light is much faster than electricity. Indeed, fiber optic networks, which consist of hair-thin glass fibers instead of copper wire, can move information at speeds 3000 times faster than conventional networks. However the signals get bogged down when they have to be processed by silicon chips. Optical chips would remove the bottleneck. (Someday theoretically, it is conceivable that computers could operate even faster than the speed of light. For generations, physicists thought nothing was faster than light moving in vacuum at about 186,000 miles per second.)

DNA Computing

Potentially, biotechnology could be used to grow cultures of bacteria that when exposed to light emit a small electrical charge, for example. The properties of biochip could be used to represent the on/off digital signals used in computing. Or a strand of synthetic DNA might represent information as a pattern of molecules, and the information might be manipulated by subjecting it to precisely designed chemical reactions that could mark or lengthen the strand. For instance, instead of using binary it could manipulate the four nucleic acids, which holds the promise of processing big numbers. This is entirely non digital way of thinking about computing.

Imagine millions of nanomachines grown from microorganisms processing information at the speed of light and sending it over far-reaching pathways. What kind of changes could we expect with computers like those?

Quantum Computing

Sometimes called the “ultimate computer” the quantum computer is based on quantum mechanics, the theory of physics that explains the erratic world of the atom. Where as an ordinary computer stores information as 0s and 1s represented by electrical currents or voltages that are either high or low, a quantum computer stores information by using states of elementary particles. Scientists envision using the energized and relaxed states of individual atoms to represent data. For example, hydrogen atoms could be made to switch off and on like a conventional computer’s transistors by moving from low energy states (off) to high energy states (on).

Other Possibilities: Molecular & Dot Computers

In the molecular computer, the silicon transistor is replaced with a single molecule. In the dot computer, the transistor is replaced by a single electron. These approaches such as mass producing atomic wires and insulators. No visible prototypes yet exist.
